Southern rock, as it came to be known, was a prominent force in the 1970s and 1980s. The Allman Brothers band was at the forefront of the sound, blending blues, country music and rock together. They were always well respected for their musicianship and have won numerous awards and accolades. Despite lineup changes caused by tragedies, conflict and drug abuse, the band continues today and Allman Brothers tickets are much sought after.

The original band members hailed form Macon, Georgia and formed in 1969. Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman and four friends put the band together, influencing a whole generation of Southern musicians. Their recording success was matched by their growing reputation as a live band. The band has broken up and reformed over the years and the current line up is embarking on a tour across several states in America. Their reputation for putting on a great show still stands and Allman Brothers tickets sell as quickly as they ever did.

The concert dates during Summer of 2007 include venues in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York State, North Carolina, Virginia and Minnesota. Fans from the early days will mingle with younger people who have discovered their music. Older fans may have fond memories of classic gigs from the past such as the 1971 appearance at the famous Fillmore East. This was the place for bands to be seen in that era and a live album was recorded from the performance. These Allman Brothers tickets were like gold dust as the band was the last to play before the venue was closed.

Another famous gig was at the outdoor festival at Watkins Glen in New York State in 1973. The band were at the peak of their powers and their joint appearance with good friends, the Grateful Dead, drew an attendance of 600,000 people. On New Year’s Eve of that year, fans got the chance to hear the Allman’s in concert on national radio. The broadcast came from the Cow Palace in San Francisco and the band jammed with Boz Scaggs and with Jerry Garcia from Grateful Dead.

It is remarkable that the band has revived, given the difficult history. Two original members died in separate motorcycle accidents. Duane Allman was killed in 1971 and bassist, Berry Oakley was killed a year later. Lamar Williams died in 1983 from lung cancer and Allen Woody died in 2000, cause of death was undisclosed. Despite the troubled times, Allman Brothers tickets remain hot property, particularly for the 20th Anniversary Tour in 1990.

Modern popular music with Christian themes in the lyrics is a big industry, especially in the United States. There are several record labels and radio stations that promote Christian music groups. The lyrics vary in their strength of feeling and the Christian message is delivered in different ways. Gospel music has often crossed over into the mainstream and many artists, such as Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, have explored their Christian beliefs.

All musical genres have artists that can be described as promoting Christianity. Several Christian music groups hail from the southern states of America or are based there. Successful groups include Jars of Clay, Third Day and Avalon. The movement has its own chart listings, appearing in Billboard Magazine. The Jesus Movement, which arose from the hippie period of the 1960s, originated a lot of the Christian music with which we are familiar today.

Country music artists have often blended gospel with their country sounds, sometimes having hit records as a result. Tennessee Ernie Ford was well known for his gospel tinged songs and the Carter Family and the Oak Ridge Boys performed this kind of music too. Contemporary Christian music groups carry on the tradition, including The Isaacs and The Singing Echoes. The Singing Echoes are all members of the same family and have received a Grammy Award nomination.

Some other genres are more controversial, as some Christian leaders think that rock music should not mix with Christian lyrics. Supporters say that Christian music groups encourage young people to endorse Christianity and to follow Christian teachings. There is Christian hip hop, ska and metal music. All of these have their own sub genres. The sincerity of the artists is not in doubt as they have chosen a less commercial path. They also suffer from jibes from non-Christian rock fans.

The alternative rock scene has many exponents of the Christian faith. The 1980s was a particular fertile time for this type of music. Undercover, a group from California released their debut album in 1982. They looked like a typical punk band with Mohawk hairstyles and tattoos, even performing punk versions of traditional hymns. Another Californian punk band, The Altar Boys, were popular in the 1980s and had an overt Christian message. Quickflight were from British Columbia and were a new wave band with an electronic sound. All these Christian music groups prove that the devil doesn’t have to have all the good music!
